Congratulations to everyone involved for doing a sterling job. Your dedication, hard work and friendliness is highly appreciated. A visit to the club notice board and scrutiny of all the letters of appreciation from different Nomad provinces, will convince everyone of the impression gained by our visitors. A Job well done!

Marshalls

Currently, we are in the process to introduce additional marshals on competition and sponsor days in order to manage play and problems on the course more efficiently. Huidiglik, is ons besig met die daarstelling van addisionele "marshalls" op kompetisie en geborgde dae om die baan beter te bestuur en probleme meer effektief op die baan aan te spreek.

This in effect will mean that on Wednesdays, Saturdays and big sponsor days there will be a starter and two Marshalls on the course. Dit sal beteken dat daar op Woensdae, Saterdae en groot geborgde dae 'n aankondiger en 2 'marshalls" op die baan sal wees. At present we have two senior members assisting us with the additional Marshall duties. We require another four members to help us and therefore appeal to all members that would like to get involved, to contact the club. Daar is reeds twee senior lede wat help met die "marshall" pligte. Die klub benodig nog vier lede om te help, dus doen ons n beroep op alle lede wat bereid sal wees om betrokke te raak om met die klub te skakel.

We would like to request all our members to support our "marshal" - system and to make every game a pleasant, friendly and happy one. Ons versoek al ons lede om die "marshall"-sisteem te ondersteun, en elke spel 'n aangename vriendelike en gelukkige een te maak.

We regularly receive suggestions for changes or alterations to the golf course from members. These suggestions are carefully considered, however the current financial status of the club requires the committee to be prudent with expenditure on capital improvements. The focus is on maintaining the current high standard and quality that we offer players.

1) The leveling of the tee boxes on holes 1,3, 6 and 9

2) Replanting of the nursery for the repair and maintenance of greens behind the 14th tee box

3) Landscaping of fire damaged trees to the left of the 18th by felling and removing the blue gum trees, importing additional soil to create a screening berm and planting of the berm with indigenous vegetation and trees. In addition the fence will be repaired/replaced where necessary

4) Clearing and landscaping of the area between the 12th and 16th tee boxes to the fence line. The dead material posing a fire hazard will be removed and the area reshaped with berms and planted with 'sour fig' ground covers.

5) Re-shaping and leveling of poorly draining areas on the greens of holes 1,6, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15.The lower parts of the greens are collection areas for water and areas trapping water have to be shaved off to allow water to drain off the green as the trapped water creates ideal conditions for development of diseases.

We wish to thank all the members who diligently repair pitch marks, fill divots and rake bunkers as this has a tremendous cumulative impact on the condition of the course.

Please encourage your fellow players to do likewise.

Regards

Mike Brett.
Vice Captain

Nomads Nationals

The Strand Golf Club hosted the 46th Nomads National Tournament ("the Nationals d'Vine") from the 19th to the 25th March 2011 and by all accounts this was one of the best Nomad Nationals ever! Even our dreaded South Easter took a break for the week!

Approximately 500 players (many with spouses) from all over South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand visited our Club for the week, for one of the biggest amateur golf events in the world and the biggest event the Strand Golf Club has ever hosted.

The guys had a huge amount of fun and enjoyed old friendships and made some new ones during their Nationals experience at the Strand. Amongst other a marquee, seating 600 people, with a fully equipped kitchen serving 3-course meals in the evenings with live music, formed the venue for the prize-giving after each day's play. Players also had huge fun at the "bush-pub" during the day, with some live sing-along entertainment. And yes, they also played some serious golf!

Course Map

 CLUB HISTORY
This is one of the Cape’s
newest additions to the
golfing circuit. The course
opened in 1994 and the
championship layout has
proved to be an exciting
challenge for any golfer.
In the intervening years,
the course has matured
greatly and a feature has
been the attention given
to the manicuring and
maintenance of the surrounds.
This is immediately
noticeable from the upstairs
terrace of the modern
clubhouse as you look
over the finishing hole and
note the manicured surrounds
of the sparkling water features.
The prominent features of the course are the abundant water hazards and bunkers, undulating greens and tree-lined fairways.
Right from the opening, the bent grass greens provided excellent putting surfaces and this remains a fact several years later. There are several tee boxes on each hole, which makes for a five hundred meter difference between championship tees and club tees over the 18 holes. In 1994, two and a half thousand trees were planted on this course and they are now becoming very much part of the round.
This is especially so as the course is situated close to the popular holiday coastal town of the Strand. This area is famed for its long stretch of unspoilt beach.
